New York Fashion Week is notoriously hectic, a whirlwind of activity that demands peak performance from everyone involved. For photographers, the experience often involves sprinting across Manhattan, racing between dress rehearsals in a desperate pursuit of the perfect shot. This season, The FADER commissioned London-based photographer Simran Kaur to document the raw, unfiltered energy backstage at some of the most anticipated shows, including Anna Sui, Tyler McGillivary, and Ella Mae, during a condensed five-day circuit.
The resulting collection of 83 candid photos captures the intimate moments that define the industry—the quiet focus of makeup artists, the camaraderie among models, and the electric anticipation before the lights hit the runway. Below, Simran Kaur shares her reflections on the unique atmosphere found at these pivotal shows.
Showpony
The energy at the Showpony show was palpable, fueled by a vibrant color palette that felt like a direct response to the season’s mood. “I was quite excited for this show since I have been a fan of the brand for a bit,” Kaur notes. “I saw ADÉLA wearing their pieces, and I think it complemented her hair and total look perfectly. She looked like a star.” The backstage area was a kaleidoscope of color, defined by bold hair choices and intricate extensions that set the tone for the collection.
Tyler McGillivary
Stepping into the backstage area at Mercer Labs for the Tyler McGillivary show felt less like a high-pressure production and more like a massive, stylish sleepover. “It was fun to watch the models lay around with their nails and makeup done, talking about whatever and scrolling Reels side by side,” says Kaur. The atmosphere was one of genuine connection, a rare moment of calm where the models could let their guards down before the intensity of the runway.
Anna Sui
For Kaur, capturing the Anna Sui show was a career milestone. “Capturing some moments backstage at Anna Sui was like making one of my long-term dreams come true,” she admits. Drawing inspiration from the brand’s signature contrast of pastel playfulness and dark, edgy undertones, the photography focuses on the intricate makeup artistry that defined the look. “I grew up being inspired by Anna Sui’s palette. It is like putting water and fire together: the contrast looks amazing.”
Ella Mae
The Ella Mae collection served as a poignant reflection on the power of girlhood. Amidst a backdrop of pink curtains and star-studded projections, the collection felt like a sanctuary. “While the world is falling apart, there was a sense of comfort in those rooms,” Kaur reflects. “To me, Ella Mae’s collection felt like a statement on girlhood: the power that it holds, and how it can bring peace and love to those places where there are none.”
Ben Doctor
The final stop, Ben Doctor, offered a sleek, sculptural aesthetic. “Step out of the lift and you’re right there backstage,” Kaur describes. “Lots of silver wigs on models looking like sculptures walking around the room.” The combination of metallic textures and a custom soundtrack by Ms* Gloom turned the runway into a high-energy dancefloor, providing a fittingly vibrant conclusion to a week defined by creativity and resilience.
