Crying in H Mart movie is “on pause,” says Japanese Breakfast”>
A film adaptation of Crying in H Mart, the hit memoir by Michelle Zauner a.k.a. Japanese Breakfast, is no longer in production. Zauner was asked about the status of the project for a new SSense feature, and said that the Hollywood strikes and the departure of director Will Sharpe had put the film “on pause” for the foreseeable future.
Well, it’s on pause. There were issues with the Hollywood strikes, and the director stepped away from the project. I spent a year working on the screenplay, which was a tough but rewarding process. I still have faith it will get made someday, but it’s not happening anytime soon. Right now, I’m focusing on other creative projects, so the film will have to wait.
The Crying in H Mart film was first announced in June 2021 soon after the release of Jubilee, the third Japanese Breakfast album. The book followed Zauner navigating her identity as a biracial woman and independent rock star while dealing with her mother’s cancer struggles. The book was a critical and commercial success and peaked at No. 2 on the New York Times Non-Fiction bestseller list on its first week of release.
