Kendrick Lamar’s highly anticipated Super Bowl halftime show has finally arrived and the super-charged performances included plenty for people to talk about: guest appearances from Samuel L. Jackson, Serena Williams, and SZA; an absolutely diabolical delivery of “Say Drake” to the cameras; and hearing an entire stadium chant “A-MINOR” in unison — ahh. But for one corner of the internet, it was a different detail that caught their eye — and obsession: Kendrick Lamar’s jeans.
Specifically, Kendrick Lamar’s boot-cut, generously flared, bell-bottom, Y2K-inspired, Old Navy-looking, (and possibly women’s) jeans. Shortly after his halftime performance users on X pointed out the piece of clothing online, equally amused and appreciative of the styling choice (“I think Kendrick Lamar’s jeans are the real MVP. Love the cut. 😆,” tweeted sports journalist Holly Rowe), as well as clowning on the fact that Lamar choose this specific design to carry out his final evisceration of Drake’s career (“imagine your opp being a cutie patootie in flared jeans like kendrick lamar,” wrote another user.).
The boot-cut jean’s resurgence shouldn’t be that much of a surprise considering the fact that everything Y2K has already been infiltrating culture and fashion for months now — but clearly Lamar’s jeans left an impression. Could it be that a large part is pure shock from seeing such a blatant Y2K-esque design on a stage as big as the Super Bowl halftime show (imagine the hub-bub if they were low-rise too)? Maybe. Surely another fact is the unexpectedness of a rapper like Lamar being the one to single-handedly championing the style.
Whatever the reason — the big question remains: Where did Lamar get those jeans? Unfortunately, it’s unclear. Per Vogue, who got the details of his entire outfit except those jeans, Lamar and his stylist Taylor McNeil did intentionally choose to hark back to the ’00s with those jeans, but they conveniently left out the specific brand he wore.
Users online have already theorized everything from Old Navy, Buckle, American Eagle, Baby Phat, Abercrombie & Fitch, and more, but the most convincing theory we’ve found is that they’re the Marco Jeans in Steel Blue Wash Denim from Celine, personalized with a razor to the hem. (Another is that they’re the flares from Balenciaga’s fall 2024 collection.) But, let’s be real, you don’t need to do all that to get the look; just go back and dig a little in your closet.
