Last week, Babyface Ray arrived in New York alongside 42 Dugg and Jorjiana as part of the 4 THE TRENCHES tour. The energy surrounding the tour reached a fever pitch when it was announced that the fast-rising Detroit rapper Lelo would make a surprise appearance at Racket NYC. Despite the generational gap, both artists share a common thread: an adroit, gritty lyrical style defined by a preternatural confidence that suggests they are always several steps ahead of the curve.

A Creative Connection

The collaboration between the two was born from a mutual connection with producer 4amjuno, who serves as a frequent collaborator for Lelo and a studio engineer for Ray. The track “On the Wall” came together organically; Ray was impressed by the demo during a home recording session, while Lelo recorded his verse while on the road, cutting the vocals quickly to match the beat’s infectious energy. Their relationship has since grown beyond the studio, with Lelo noting that Ray has become a trusted mentor for real estate and investment advice.

The Evolution of the Detroit Sound

Backstage at Racket NYC, the pair reflected on the rapid evolution of the Detroit rap scene. For Babyface Ray, the shift is palpable. “The generation I came up with was more about shit-talking and environmental storytelling,” Ray explained. “Now, I think there is more sauce and swag to it, making it more relatable to a global audience. It’s evolving past the point where listeners might not understand the local vernacular.”

When asked about the video shoot for “On the Wall,” Lelo praised Ray’s authenticity. “He just pulled up to where I’m from,” Lelo said. “The block showed him love because he was so chill. That’s how a rapper is supposed to be—able to pull up anywhere and connect with the people.”
