A New Chapter for Thaiboy Digital
Thaiboy Digital has undergone many transformations, both in name and artistic direction. Born Khazitin Bonleunge, he has navigated various monikers—from Thaiboy Goon to DJ Billybool—but his latest evolution reflects a deeper, more intentional path. His new name, which he notes is difficult to pronounce in Thai, translates to “seeker of wisdom.” It is a fitting title for an artist who has spent the last decade defining the sound of the underground.
On a sunny afternoon in New York City, the artist, known to his friends as Nino, reflects on his journey. Dressed in silver rings and Cuban links, he exudes the quiet confidence of someone who has finally arrived at a place of contentment. For Thaiboy, this is simply another day in paradise.
The Sound of Paradise
His latest LP, Paradise, marks a significant departure from the moody, atmospheric Swedish rap that first brought him to prominence alongside Bladee, Ecco2k, and Whitearmor as part of the collective Drain Gang. Collaborating with the Swedish trio swedm®, Thaiboy has crafted a project that pays homage to the electronic dance music of his youth and the vibrant 3cha sounds that provided him solace during his return to Thailand.
The album serves as a bridge between his past and his present. Tracks like “Irish Tears” showcase a progressive house influence, blending melancholic introspection with the euphoric energy of a sunrise rave. “You get sad because it’s so beautiful,” he explains of the track’s emotional resonance. “That’s what an Irish tear should be, seeing something so beautiful it makes you shed a tear.”
Reflecting on a Global Journey
Thaiboy’s narrative is deeply rooted in his displacement. After moving to Sweden at age eight, he was forced to leave the country in 2013, a moment he describes as having his world shattered. Returning to Thailand, he had to rebuild his identity within a new community. This period of transition eventually led to the creation of his DJ Billybool persona, a project that allowed him to explore Eurodance and process his grief following the loss of his close friend, Isak.
Today, Thaiboy sees no conflict between his life as a father and businessman and his love for the rave. He views his success as a manifestation of his dreams, supported by his label, Bank of Star Sound System, and a global community of fans. As he looks toward the future, he remains driven by a desire for the unknown. “If anything, I long to be back in the unknown,” he says, “to stir up my head and create something new.”
