Akai’s Latest MPCs Are Full Studios in a Box

Akai has introduced two new additions to its iconic MPC lineup, catering to producers who prefer a tactile, hardware-first approach to beat-making. The MPC One G2 and MPC Key 37 G2 are designed as comprehensive, standalone systems, allowing creators to sample, sequence, arrange, and mix their tracks entirely without the need for a computer.

Both units feature significant internal upgrades, including an 8-core processor, 4GB of RAM, and 64GB of internal storage. According to Akai, these specifications provide four times the processing power of the previous generation, offering enough headroom to run up to 32 plugin instruments and 16 stereo audio tracks simultaneously in standalone mode. The devices run on the updated MPC3 operating system, which emphasizes a modern, track-based workflow and a comprehensive Linear Arranger.

The MPC One G2 serves as the primary pad-based controller. It features 16 velocity- and pressure-sensitive RGB pads, four Q-Link knobs, and a versatile array of connectivity options including MIDI in/out, CV/Gate outputs, SD card storage, and both USB-A and USB-C ports. Its aesthetic is a nod to classic Akai hardware, featuring a blue finish reminiscent of the MPC4000 and MPC1000.

For those who prefer building tracks through melodies and chords, the MPC Key 37 G2 offers 37 synth-action keys with aftertouch, alongside pitch and mod wheels. It retains the 16 RGB pads and includes stereo inputs and outputs, MIDI, CV/Gate, and USB-C connectivity. Its cream colorway pays homage to Akai’s late-1980s era.

Both systems are highly integrated, supporting USB-C audio streaming, Ableton Live Control Mode, and project import/export. They also feature Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity, enabling direct sampling from external devices like phones and tablets. Each unit ships with over 20GB of sounds, including the Native Instruments Analog Dreams MPC Edition.

The MPC One G2 is available for $799, while the MPC Key 37 G2 is priced at $999.
