Macklemore did not remain silent when stadium owners rallied against his vocal Palestine advocacy, and billionaire Robert Kraft is now making it clear exactly where he stands on the matter. The New England Patriots owner has confirmed that he personally blocked the rapper from performing at Gillette Stadium, citing not just the “Free Palestine” statements made during Ed Sheeran’s shows in New Jersey, but a broader history of antisemitic imagery and rhetoric that he felt crossed a line.
“Based on Macklemore’s recent actions, material shared from the stage during Ed Sheeran’s shows in New Jersey, and a broader history of antisemitic rhetoric and imagery that we believe has been deeply offensive and hurtful to the Jewish community, we determined that his participation in the September 25th and 26th concerts at Gillette Stadium would cross that line,” Kraft said in an official statement.
Kraft’s position was unambiguous, and he offered no apologies for the decision. The situation is particularly charged given Robert Kraft’s extensive history of Jewish advocacy. He founded the Blue Square Alliance Against Hate in 2019—formerly known as the Foundation to Combat Antisemitism—and has invested heavily in high-profile advertising campaigns aimed at combating hate. His organization’s mission centers on fighting antisemitism and promoting tolerance, which he stated compelled him to take action once the Macklemore tour situation emerged.
The controversy also brought renewed attention to Macklemore’s 2014 costume controversy, where the rapper wore a hooked nose, black beard, and bowl cut that critics identified as an antisemitic Jewish caricature. Although the artist apologized at the time, claiming no intent to offend, the image resurfaced during the current tour backlash as evidence of a deeper issue. Kraft’s team pointed to this history alongside recent Palestine statements as justification for the venue ban.
“This decision is not about diminishing the suffering of innocent Palestinians or denying anyone the right to advocate on their behalf,” Kraft continued. “Their pain and loss are real. But that advocacy should not come at the expense of the Jewish community or obscure the responsibility of Hamas, a United States and globally designated terrorist organization whose horrific actions have caused immeasurable suffering for Palestinians and Israelis alike.”
Kraft noted that he has directed resources toward Palestine and created opportunities for Palestinians over the years, distinguishing his stance as a rejection of what he views as selective blame and inflammatory rhetoric rather than the cause itself. He also signaled an openness to dialogue, stating he would welcome a direct conversation with the rapper. As the industry continues to navigate the fallout, Ed Sheeran remains caught between competing pressures from stadium owners who have coordinated their stance, effectively forcing the tour promoter’s hand.
