Back in 2023, A24 announced, to the frustration of many, that the film studio would make a transition from creating exclusively niche films to “action and big IP projects.” The uproar was slightly overblown: since then, A24 has released some of the most challenging and provocative films in its catalog (The Zone of Silence, I Saw The TV Glow) while teaming up with Alex Garland for the box office hits Civil War and Warfare as well as the Oscar-nominated Ex Machina.
Now, it appears that A24 have landed that “big IP project” it was after: a live-action, feature-length film adaptation of the hit roleplaying game Elden Ring. Garland will write and direct the movie produced by A24 and the game’s publisher BandaiNamco, Variety reports.
Released in 2022, Elden Ring is a sprawling game set in a decaying medieval-themed world full of grotesque monsters; players control The Tarnished, a kind of exiled individual capable of resurrection who seeks to become the world’s ruler, known as the Elden Lord. The labyrinthine lore, requiring a good deal of effort to understand, was written by Game of Thrones creator George R.R. Martin.
Hidetaka Miyazaki directed the game with co-direction from Yui Tanimura. Elden Ring has sold over 30 million copies worldwide and raked up awards. An expansion called Shadow of the Erdtree was released in January 2024, with the spinoff Elden Ring Nightreign coming on May 30, 2025.
