BMW and Toyota are advancing their longstanding partnership to bring hydrogen-powered vehicles into the mainstream. With plans to launch its first series-production hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicle (FCEV) by 2028, BMW is set to offer an all-electric, zero-emission option powered by hydrogen, marking a significant step toward carbon neutrality.
The collaboration focuses on the joint development of next-generation fuel cell technology, combining BMW’s expertise in electric drives with Toyota’s pioneering hydrogen technology. The goal is to provide customers with versatile FCEV options that maintain each brand’s unique identity. The companies are also advocating for the expansion of hydrogen infrastructure to support the broader adoption of this sustainable energy source.
BMW Chairman Oliver Zipse called the development “a milestone in automotive history,” while Toyota President Koji Sato emphasized the shared vision of “technology openness” and a multi-pathway approach to carbon neutrality.
