OMEGA has brought back one of its most sought-after and emblematic time-tellers, the Speedmaster FOiS (First OMEGA in Space), a model with a history that goes way back to the late ’50s but was eventually discontinued in 2021. While the original CK 2998 FOiS was known to be a personal reference of NASA astronaut Walter “Wally” Schirra, who ended up wearing it during the Sigma 7 mission of the Mercury program in 1962.
Reimagined in a gray-blue CVD dial, the new FOiS timekeeper faithfully recreates the vintage model’s DNA, which includes the indices and Alpha-style hands being incorporated with vintage Super-LumiNova. Encased in polished stainless steel, the 39.7mm watch case is paired with a black aluminum bezel ring, complete with the hallmarked “Dot Over Ninety” tachymeter scale.
The most noticeable change is the thickness. Now coming at 13.4mm, the new model not only is thinner than its forebearers but houses the modern Co-Axial Master Chronometer Calibre 3861 — the latest iteration of the caliber that powered the original FOIS models. The caseback is stamped with a Seahorse medallion, along with “SPEEDMASTER,” “THE FIRST OMEGA IN SPACE,” and “OCTOBER 3, 1962,” as inscription.
Prices range from $7,500 – $7,900 USD, the new Speedmaster “First OMEGA in Space” is offered in three bracelet options: steel bracelet, black leather and brown leather straps — all currently available for inquiry through the OMEGA’s official website.
