Legendary rapper Xzibit has found himself at the center of an international controversy after the Latvian government intervened to cancel his scheduled performance in Riga. The concert, which was slated to take place at the Coyote Fly club as part of the artist’s Kingmaker European Tour, was abruptly halted following scrutiny regarding his recent professional engagements in Russia.
The cancellation highlights the intensifying pressure on Western artists who have continued to perform in Moscow since the onset of the war in Ukraine. According to reports from UNN, the rapper had previously taken the stage at Moscow’s VK Stadium on December 3, 2024, and at the Luzhniki Stadium on September 27 of that same year. These appearances, while not explicitly political in nature, have become a focal point for Baltic nations maintaining a hardline stance against cultural exchange with Russia during the conflict.
The management at the Coyote Fly club acknowledged the situation, noting that they had no evidence suggesting the rapper’s performances involved political messaging or support for the Russian government. However, the venue ultimately decided to cancel the event, citing the need for more rigorous vetting of artists’ international activities moving forward. The club emphasized that the decision was driven by the optics of hosting an artist with recent ties to Russia, rather than any specific allegations of propaganda.
This incident reflects a broader, emerging pattern across Europe where performers are increasingly facing consequences for maintaining professional relationships with Russia. While Xzibit is not a Russian national or a known political ally of the Kremlin, his touring geography has inadvertently made him a target of regional geopolitical tensions. As of now, the rapper’s team has not issued a public response, leaving uncertainty regarding the status of his remaining European tour dates.
