The acclaimed indie artist (Sandy) Alex G has unveiled a haunting new collaboration titled “Pain is the Heart of Love,” featuring the distinctive vocals of Paul Buchanan, best known as the frontman of The Blue Nile. The track serves as a centerpiece for the soundtrack to Jane Schoenbrun’s latest film, Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma, which is currently playing in select theaters.
The song showcases a delicate balance between Alex G’s intricate acoustic guitar arrangements and sweeping, atmospheric strings. This sonic backdrop provides the perfect canvas for Buchanan’s gravelly, emotive delivery. According to reports, the lyrics were penned by Schoenbrun, focusing on the complex, often blurred lines between acrimony and genuine connection.
Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma stars Hannah Einbinder and Gillian Anderson. The narrative follows a young queer director tasked with reviving a horror slasher franchise, only to find herself spiraling into a delirious state while visiting the original film’s reclusive star at the production’s primary location.
This project marks the third collaboration between Alex G and Schoenbrun, following their successful work on 2022’s We’re All Going to the World’s Fair and 2024’s I Saw the TV Glow. The film’s soundtrack is slated for release on August 21 and features a diverse array of artists, including R.E.M., Sally Shapiro, Donna Lewis, Counting Crows, and Okay Kaya. Additionally, Waxwork Records will release the full score composed by Alex G on September 11.
