The 56-year-old singer required urgent hospital care and is currently in the process of recovering and regaining her strength, according to her representative.
The health emergency has necessitated T-Boz’s absence from several performances on the group’s ongoing “It’s Iconic” tour. Despite the setback, promoters have confirmed that there are no cancellations, and the tour will proceed as planned while the group awaits further updates on a potential return date.
Chilli addressed the situation directly during the group’s August 28 performance at the Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville. “As you guys know, my sister T-Boz has sickle cell, you know that it’s not a secret, and sometimes those flare-ups come, and this is that time,” she told the audience.
Representative Christal Jordan confirmed the details of the situation, stating, “Tionne recently experienced a sickle cell crisis that required hospitalization, and she is currently recovering and regaining her strength. The love shown for T-Boz has been overwhelming.” During recent shows, fans have stepped up to sing T-Boz’s iconic verses, while supporting acts like Salt-N-Pepa and En Vogue have rallied around Chilli to ensure the show goes on.
A History of Health Challenges
This latest episode is part of a long-standing health journey that T-Boz has shared with her fans since the height of TLC’s fame. In a 2017 interview, she explained the reality of the condition: “The easiest way to describe it is oxygen isn’t getting to our vital organs. So, if it’s your legs, you can’t walk.” She has long maintained a rigorous, strategically planned schedule to manage her health, carefully vetting travel times and city stops.
Beyond sickle cell, T-Boz has faced other significant medical hurdles, including a 2006 diagnosis of a benign brain tumor. The surgery to remove it was considered high-risk due to her sickle cell, and the subsequent recovery process lasted over three years, impacting her hearing, balance, and speech. More recently, in August 2024, she was hospitalized for an intestinal blockage, which she clarified was unrelated to her sickle cell, stemming instead from scar tissue from a previous surgery.
