Grimes has officially released the trailer for her highly anticipated next album, Psyopera. The enigmatic Canadian artist dropped a video titled Eve Is Online…, which sets a distinct tone for the project with visuals reminiscent of 1980s gaming aesthetics and a cryptic message: “Please wait patiently for the failure of the system.”
The trailer serves as a deep dive into the artist’s evolving creative landscape, featuring a psychedelic montage of dystopian imagery, including gargantuan alien statues, vintage war footage, and intergalactic battles. Throughout the visuals, Grimes cycles through various personas, from angelic figures to elfish warriors, all while navigating a narrative that mirrors the opening of the Gospel of John, albeit reinterpreted through the lens of artificial intelligence.
The narration explicitly references the rise of modern technology: “In the beginning was the word and the word was God. And man made God in his image, and God embraced man’s nature. And Eden was forged in metal and artificial light rivaled the sun. And God said, ‘Conquer the heavens.’ On the first day, God created the large language model.”
Reflecting on the Future of AI
In a recent interview, Grimes opened up about her relationship with music and her complex views on the rapid advancement of AI. After previously considering stepping away from the industry to focus on her life as a mother, she found renewed inspiration to create. While she clarifies that she does not use AI to generate her music, she remains deeply concerned about its societal implications.
“This is the most dangerous thing that is ever going to happen,” she noted during her discussion. “This is a bigger deal than Jesus. It’s the same as monotheism taking over the Western world, if not much, much more impactful.”
As of now, the tracklist and official release date for Psyopera remain under wraps. Fans are encouraged to watch the trailer below to catch the first glimpse of this ambitious new chapter.
