In a surprising turn of events, the critically acclaimed HBO series Girls is officially returning to television. Lena Dunham, the creator and star of the groundbreaking show, has confirmed that the series has been greenlit for an additional five episodes, with production slated to commence in 2027. Fans can expect a reunion of the core cast, including Allison Williams, Zosia Mamet, and Jemima Kirke, who has recently been active as an advice columnist at Elle.
In a statement provided to Variety, Dunham explained the motivation behind the revival. “We always said we would only return to ‘Girls’ if there was a specific story we were burning to tell,” she noted. “I’ve missed these characters, but for a long time I couldn’t quite picture them in the present day. Then, right around my fortieth birthday, they started talking to me in the shower. And, as you may remember, once this fivesome starts talking it’s pretty hard to get them to stop.”
This announcement follows a period of reflection for Dunham, who earlier this year released her memoir, Famesick. The book chronicles her meteoric rise to fame following the success of Girls, while also addressing her personal struggles with health and addiction. Notably, the memoir includes candid reflections on her former co-star Adam Driver, whom she described as “verbally aggressive” during their time on set. Famesick also touches upon her past relationship with musician Jack Antonoff.
As anticipation builds for the return of the series, viewers are encouraged to revisit the show’s history, including early interviews with the cast and the original trailers that defined a generation of television.
