AlphaTheta has officially announced the HDJ-F9, a pair of professional on-ear wireless DJ headphones engineered to solve the industry’s long-standing struggle with latency. Built around the company’s proprietary SonicLink wireless technology, these headphones aim to provide a seamless, cable-free experience for performers who require precision monitoring.
Latency has historically been the primary barrier preventing DJs from adopting wireless gear. Even a minor delay between the audio in the headphones and the output from the speakers can render beatmatching nearly impossible. AlphaTheta addresses this by utilizing SonicLink to keep latency as low as 9 ms, a threshold the company claims is sufficient for professional mixing and scratching without the need for a physical connection.
The headphones feature a user-friendly “Touch Pairing” system, allowing DJs to connect instantly by touching the headphones to compatible hardware, such as the AlphaTheta DJM-V5 mixer (which requires a firmware update). For setups lacking native support, users can utilize the separately sold SonicLink Transmitter HP-TX01.
Designed for the rigors of the booth, the HDJ-F9 units are equipped with newly developed 40 mm drivers and a specialized bass-reflex chamber in each housing. Despite their robust build, they maintain a manageable weight of 285 grams. Battery performance is tiered based on usage: when using the status LED, users can expect seven hours of life via SonicLink or 13 hours via Bluetooth. Disabling the LED extends these figures to nine and 25 hours, respectively. A traditional coiled cable is also included for those who prefer wired monitoring.
The HDJ-F9 is scheduled for release in late October with a retail price of $349.
