“I’ve been out on pretrial release for so long that it kind of started to feel like I’m never gonna go to jail,” Shine admits. “That reality is just now smacking me in the face.”

The charges stem from a 2024 federal investigation into a scheme involving the fraudulent acquisition of promethazine with codeine. According to court documents, Shine and his co-defendants utilized sophisticated methods to impersonate physicians and secure wholesale orders of controlled substances. While the initial indictment included a laundry list of charges—ranging from wire fraud to aggravated identity theft—Shine eventually entered a guilty plea to three counts, resulting in a three-year prison sentence.
Despite the severity of the legal proceedings, Shine has remained remarkably composed. He views his latest project, Get Rich Or Die Sippin’, as a pivotal moment in his career, noting, “I wanted it to be really good because there’s a high chance that this is the last large body of work that I release before I go to prison.”

Born Jasper William Johnson in Minnesota, Shine’s path to music was paved by an early interest in skate culture and production tutorials. While his legal troubles have dominated headlines, his music continues to resonate with a growing fanbase. Even as he faces the prospect of incarceration, his focus remains on his artistic legacy.
“I’m obviously going to be spending as much time with my family and friends as possible, but I’m also very focused on my career,” Shine says. “I want to make sure that I come out bigger than I am now.”
