New York Music Month Returns with Free Performances and Industry Events

The 9th annual New York Music Month festival is currently underway, delivering an ambitious program designed to bolster New York City’s vibrant music ecosystem. Following a successful kickoff on June 3 with the Flagship NYMM Conference in Lower Manhattan, the festival continues to provide a platform for both established icons and emerging talent through a diverse array of programming.

The month-long celebration features over 60 free events, including more than 20 live performances and 40 educational talks. Highlights of the calendar include fireside chats with Grammy winner Samara Joy and Frankie Grande, alongside an indie artist panel featuring Cautious Clay, L’Rain, Anik Kahn, Margaret Glaspy, and Anand Wilder.

Live music remains a cornerstone of the festival, with performances by Kelsey Lu, The Antlers, and SALIMATA scheduled across the five boroughs. Additionally, the festival is spotlighting the importance of independent radio through curated showcases from WNYC, WFUV, WFMU, The Lot Radio, and WKCR.

A Packed Schedule of Industry Insights

Beyond live music, the festival provides invaluable resources for industry professionals and artists. Notable upcoming events include a conversation with Nile Rodgers on June 10 at Power Station at BerkleeNYC, and a centennial celebration of Miles Davis on June 12. Later in the month, attendees can look forward to sessions like “Inside the Mix” with Young Guru on June 19 and “Transmissions NYC” at Elsewhere on June 18.

Supporting Local Artists with Free Rehearsal Spaces

Recognizing the logistical challenges faced by independent musicians, New York Music Month has facilitated access to free rehearsal spaces throughout the city. Participating venues include:

  • Smash Studios (Manhattan): A professional facility equipped with drums, amps, and vocal systems.
  • Greenwich House Music School (Manhattan): A non-profit community school offering 14 studios.
  • Brooklyn Conservatory of Music (Park Slope): Providing 17 rehearsal studios.
  • Fenix Studios (Staten Island): Featuring six rehearsal studios and two recording spaces.

These resources, combined with the festival’s extensive programming, underscore a continued commitment to nurturing the next generation of New York City talent.
