Protect on the Bills, Ballhog, and Gossip Girl

The FADER catches up with Buffalo rapper Protect at Rolling Loud 2026 to discuss his creative evolution, his love for cinema, and his Buffalo roots.

New York rapper Protect has cultivated an uncanny ear for production, but his success is far from accidental. While he has collaborated with notable producers like Cade, ok, Rio Levya, CXO, and prettifun, Protect’s artistry is defined by his own ability to craft indelible melodies and sharp cadences. Tracks like “Ballhog Summer” and “bbysit” showcase a rapper who is deeply invested in the architecture of his songs. His recent work, including the introspective “Ion Wanna Talk (Instagram Live)” and the soaring “IfUGotMe” from his project 500 Days of Summer, highlights a cinephile’s approach to storytelling.

During a conversation at Rolling Loud 2026 in Orlando, Protect opened up about his Buffalo roots, his evolving perspective on his craft, and the influences that shape his sound. When asked about his hometown, he remains characteristically grounded: “Watch the Bills and eat,” he says, though he remains optimistic about the Buffalo Bills’ future, noting that while they have work to do, they are consistently on the cusp of greatness.

Growth and Artistic Integrity

Reflecting on his journey, Protect traces his evolution back to his first track, “IGNORANT FREESTYLE,” recorded when he was just 14. Comparing that early work to recent releases like “Pwned” or “Whitney,” he emphasizes that his growth is rooted in authenticity. “I rap from the heart,” he explains. “Whatever I’m doing in my life, I rap about it. It’s a sneak peek into my life.”

This commitment to honesty extends to his lyrical style. While he doesn’t identify as a traditional lyricist, he prioritizes fun and self-trust. “I just trust myself and the fans lowkey fuck with it,” he notes. His eclectic interests, ranging from video games like Resident Evil 9 to the teen drama Gossip Girl, often find their way into his music. He cites the latter as a surprising source of inspiration, particularly the character Blair Waldorf, whose confidence resonates with his own philosophy on individuality.

Looking Ahead

As part of the Ballhog collective, led by BruceDropEmOff, Protect is focused on the future. His advice for aspiring artists is simple: “Just stay true to you. At the end of the day, it’s just you, the man in the mirror.” Whether he is recommending an AT2020 microphone for beginners or teasing new music, Protect remains focused on the process. “I’m rapping every day,” he says. “So just know something is coming.”
