Will Smith is bringing his West Philly roots back to the small screen with a brand new scripted series that is set to chronicle the authentic story of how he and DJ Jazzy Jeff built a legendary career from the ground up. The project, titled “215” in a nod to Philadelphia’s iconic area code, is currently in development by Smith’s production company, Westbrook Studios, in partnership with The Malar Group.
Far from a simple nostalgia piece, the series aims to capture the raw ambition and struggle of the late 1980s. It will delve into the challenges faced by two young artists from West Philadelphia as they attempted to break into a music industry that was not always welcoming to their sound. The narrative will explore the complexities of label meetings, the importance of staying true to one’s roots, the volatility of sudden fame, and the enduring friendship that served as the foundation for their success.
Terence Carter, who oversees television development for Westbrook Studios, emphasized the significance of the project. “Westbrook has always been focused on developing stories with strong characters, distinctive worlds and a clear point of view,” Carter stated. “215 is especially meaningful to us because it draws from the rise of DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince and celebrates Philadelphia during such a defining era in the city’s late-’80s/early-’90s hip-hop scene.”
According to reports, the series will provide an intimate look at how the duo navigated the pressures of the industry while maintaining their personal loyalty to one another. This collaboration marks the first official partnership between Westbrook Studios and The Malar Group, with both entities expressing interest in developing further film and television projects together.
Westbrook Studios has established a strong track record for producing high-quality hip-hop-centric narratives. The company was behind Bel-Air, the dramatic reimagining of the classic sitcom that offered a grittier, more authentic perspective on the original material. With a portfolio that includes Cobra Kai, Women of the Movement, and upcoming projects like I Am Legend 2, the studio is well-positioned to bring the story of the 215 to life.
